EVALUATION OF FROST SUSCEPTIBILITY OF SOILS USING DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS OF TEST RESULTS
EVALUATION DE LA GELIVITE DES SOLS PAR DIFFERENTES INTERPRETATIONS DES MESURES
This report deals with a project carried out to determine the effect of temperatures on the various parameters generally used to assess the frost susceptibility of soil and their relationship with frost susceptibility as defined by Ducker and Arakawa. The co-efficient proposed by Ducker is the ratio between the volume of the ice formed by the water drawn up and the volume of frozen soil. The co-efficient introduced by Arakawa is the ratio between the latent freezing heat of the water drawn up and the net flow of the heat consumed at the freezing front. Specimens of different soils and of granular materials, compacted and saturated with water, were subjected to frost tests in the course of which the base of the specimens was kept in water at + 4 degrees C and the top exposed to cold air at constant temperature. A comparison between heaving and the quantity of absorbed water showed that heaving sometimes includes a component due to the freezing of water that is present before freezing sets in. This component is not characteristic of frost susceptibility since it occurs in any saturated granular material if frost propagation is sufficiently swift i.e. if the water freezes before it has time to move.
