VIBRATIONS INDUCED BY ROAD TRAFFIC
MARKVIBRATIONER ORSAKADE AV VAEGTRAFIK
A survey was made to show the effect of different types of unevenness on road surfaces. A plank of some few centimetres' thickness will cause an increase of 5 to 10 times the vibration velocity compared to an even surface. If that thickness is further increased, a non-linear increase of the vibrations is obtained. Other types of unevenness were studied as well as the effects of different protective measures. The following parameters and protective measures proved to have great positive effect: 1. The evenness of the road surface. 2. Very low vehicle speeds. 3. Restriction of types of vehicles. 4. Deeply incised slots. 5. Increased depth of foundation. Other parameters such as load limitations, thicker superstructures and ordinary speeds were found to have little effect on inconveniences due to vibration. See also IRRD abstract no. 214777. /TRRL/
