DESIRABLE STRENGTH OF STABILIZED LAYERS IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS . 5TH CONFERENCE ON ASPHALT PAVEMENTS FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA (CAPSA 89). PROCEEDINGS HELD IN SWAZILAND, 5-9 JUNE, 1989

The National Transport Commission is currently rehabilitating many high quality asphalt surfaced pavements which carry large numbers of heavy axle loads. In many cases the pavements have not carried the traffic which they should have been able to carry according to current design procedures, and they currently require significant strengthening. This paper shows that the life of these pavements could have been extended significantly by initially constructing stronger, well cemented, stabilized subbases. Heavy Vehicle Simulator test results, the evaluation of several in-service pavements and theoretical analyses have been used to show the trend of expected pavement life as a function of subbase strength. The conclusion is drawn that stronger subbases can often be more cost effective, in terms of the subbase cost per million equivalent single axles carried, than those which are typically constructed in accordance with current practice in southern Africa.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828827.
