SURFACING SEALS: DISCUSSION OF TRH3 WITH A VIEW TO DEVELOPING A CONCISE DESIGN METHOD . 5TH CONFERENCE ON ASPHALT PAVEMENTS FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA (CAPSA 89). PROCEEDINGS HELD IN SWAZILAND, 5-9 JUNE, 1989
A comparison of the different design methods based on the procedures presented in the Technical Recommendations for Highways Draft TRH3 (see IRRD 810580) has been made. These methods have been summarised from the point of view of the three primary variables that determine spray rates, namely, stone size as measured by (ALD) average least dimension, surface hardness as related to embedment and traffic which affects voids in the layer of stone. A reasonable comparison of the design methods was found within a specific range of traffic volumes. Sufficient common ground therefore exists for a single simplified design method to be formulated.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828827.
