EUROPE 1992: BIRTH OF A NATION

In 1992 the European Community will face a new era in air transportation and the single market will affect areas ranging from airport design to air traffic control operation. The International Civil Airports Association and other international aviation organizations are looking for ways to smooth the transition to the single market, exploring, for example, the feasibility of using the extra income from duty-free concessions to support new expenses as opposed to increasing passenger taxation. European hubs will continue to grow, and new hubs will likely develop due to such events as the opening of Eastern Europe and the unification of Germany. Capacity constraints and environmental problems, noise and space limitations, and the increased demand for air travel in 1992 requires a combination of solutions suggested by ICAA-Europe and others.
