CRYOGENIC ASPECTS OF SUPERCONDUCTING ELECTRICAL MACHINES FOR SHIP PROPULSION
Comprehensive studies have been performed on complete propulsion system, including liquid helium refrigeration support equipment, to determine overall size and weight of such systems. Development of high specific horsepower superconducting propulsion systems require machine designs with thermodynamic optimum cryogenic conditions as well as acceptable machine efficiency. Westinghouse has designed, built, and tested two superconducting a-c generators. This paper summarizes the results of superconducting propulsion design studies and the experience developed on the Segmag machines.
