CONTROLLING COSTS. IMPROVING LTL DELIVERY SERVICE QUALITY WITH STATISTICAL PROCESS CONTROL

This article describes a study conducted in 1987 to explore the use of Statistical Process Control (SPC) for improving LTL delivery service at Yellow Freight System, Inc. Some conclusions and recommendations are: a carrier has to define a traffic lane that is both conceptually sound and practical for statistical process control of delivery service; a carrier has to obtain accurate measurements of delivery service for the shipments of each subgroup; the practice of closing on weekends by customers can severely bias measurements of total delivery days; though this study involved a case analysis, the methodological problems are not idiosyncratic to Yellow Freight System, Inc., the recommended processes and solutions are generally applicable to other LTL carriers.
