WHERE IN THE WORLD DO WE GO FROM HERE?
The rapidly shifting international situation has created many challenges which now face the auto industry, challenges which must be addressed in order to maintain growth. Among these challenges are a competitive market which combines excess capacity with slow growth in the automotive industry, newly emerging markets in Eastern Europe, the Pacific Rim and the Soviet Union, and an increased concern with environmental issues which has resulted in such measures and the Clean Air bills and the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations. The speaker points out that restrictive policies which focus exclusively on environmental concerns will be detrimental to the automotive economy, and that realistic measures should be studied.
