55 MPH/120 MILE RANGE FOR EV
An electric vehicle with a range of 120 miles (193.2 km) at a cruising speed of 40 mph (64.4 km/h) and 75 miles (120.7 km) in stop-and-go city driving has been developed by the Cooper Development Association, Inc. The vehicle weighs 2952 lbs. (1337 kg), including the 1200 lbs. (544 kg) of batteries, has a streamlined shape to minimize air resistance, and is constructed with a practical design able to be mass produced. Energy is provided by 18, six-volt lead-acid storage batteries which may be recharged overnight. The electrical control system maximizes vehicle range by maintaining a more uniform battery current draw. The front wheel drive system uses a specially wound, separately excited, electric motor which with the matched control system provides extremely high efficiency. The vehicle has a unique door design for easy entrance and exit and an oversized rub strip to reduce dent damage. Virtually all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for 1975 model cars are met by the prototype car which was built by Triad Services, Inc.
