I-205 COLUMBIA RIVER BRIDGE FOUNDATION LOAD TEST PROGRAM
A field load test program was performed to develop foundation design parameters for the proposed I-205 Columbia River Bridge. Spreed footings were recommended for areas where competent foundation materials are encountered at relatively shallow depths. High-capacity, end-bearing piles were recommended for foundation support where competent foundation materials are at depths of approximately 100 feet below river bottom. Friction piles were recommended for foundations in areas of deep deposits of recent river sands. This paper is limited to a presentation of the results and analysis of the friction pile driving and load testing only. The predictive equation developed for design of friction pile foundations is discussed. Wave equation analysis was used to evaluate ultimate pile capacity, pile stresses during driving, and hammer-pile compatibility.
