STATIC PENETROMETER UTILIZATION IN ALLUVIAL SOILS OF WESTERN WASHINGTON
Experiences gained by performing subsurface investigation in alluvial soils utilizing the Bergemann Static Penetrometer at fourteen different sites within Western Washington are presented. The advantages of the method are discussed, including savings to the client, accurate magnitude and time rate of settlement prediction, preferable location of undisturbed sampling, integral soil profile, location or bearing strata, and pile design. For each of the above sites, hollow-stem auger borings were also performed. A comparison is made between the N-values obtained from the Standard Penetration Test and q sub c obtained from the Static Penetrometer Test. A correlation is made between q sub c obtained by the static penetrometer and c sub c' calculated from consolidation tests on undisturbed samples.
