INVESTIGATION OF THE SIX SOLDIER SLIDE
The Six-Soldier slide is located on Road 3745 in the Siskiyou National Forest, Oregon. The slide necessitated building a bypass road and continued movement threatened another road below the slide. Investigation revealed that the slide was about 300 feet by 200 feet in deeply weathered serpentine. The failure plane is believed to have been determined by the gradually changing properties of the weathering profile with depth. Stability was analyzed using Mortanstern-Price solutions for noncircular failure surfaces. Corrective measures (toe buttress, drainage galleries, and horizontal drains) were investigated. Ground water control was recommended as the most effective stabilization method.
