STRUCTURAL INVESTIGATION OF ROADS FOR THE DESIGN OF STRENGTHENING
The structural condition of a range of motorway and trunk road pavements with bituminous and lean concrete roadbases was examined by non-destructive testing, coring, excavation of trial pits, and by laboratory testing of samples. An assessment was made of the suitability of these methods for indicating the need for strengthening and showing whether or not individual layers should be retained in the strengthened pavement. Methods were developed for designing strengthening measures for both types of pavement.
