A NEW ROTATING-PROBE EDDY CURRENT METHOD FOR INSPECTING BAR SURFACE
This paper describes new eddy current test equipment developed by Bethlehem Steel for inspecting asrolled bars for surface defects. The equipment has been installed and used in production to inspect 1 3/4 to 4 in. (44 to 101 mm) round bars. The equipment rotates an eddy current probe around an advancing bar with the probe held a preset minimum distance from the bar surface. Key features of the bar-testing equipment are that it: 1) maintains a constant test sensitivity for varying probe-to-bar spacing, 2) indicates as defective only those defects which exceed a preselected length and depth, and 3) automatically paint-marks detected defects. /Author/
