DESIGN OF COLUMNS SUBJECT TO BIAXIAL BENDING
The current AISC Specification design requirements for biaxially loaded beam-columns are reviewed, new design procedures are proposed, and the size of column section required by the existing and proposed design rules for several practical design problems are compared. Limitations of the proposed method are set forth, and three precautions when designing beam-columns by the proposed method are recommended. It is noted that improvements in the prediction of the capacity of beam columns must be dependent on cross-sectional properties. Design aids are presented which simplify evaluation with the exponential interaction equations presented here. Recommendations are presented relating to the design of compact W shape beam-columns under biaxial eccentric load, frameworks with critical lateral deflection, and areas for future research.
