OPERATIONAL ASPECTS OF MINIBUS SERVICES
In this report various operational aspects of minibus services are dealt with. There have been reports that in some areas minibus operations have been prone to bunching and general reliability difficulties. This may be caused not so much by vehicle size, but to the difficulties involved in operating close headways, and operating in congested areas. In section two, reliability measurement is considered. In section three, results are presented from some practical studies of minibus service reliability. In section four, the relative cost implications of improving an unreliable full-sized bus service as opposed to converting to minibuses. Finally in section five, an exploration is made of how generalized costs might be utilized to consider operational aspects of minibus conversions. For related work see IRRD 830330, 830331 and 830332.
