USE OF IRRADIATED HEAT SHRINKABLE POLYMERS FOR CORROSION/ELECTROLYSIS PROTECTION AND REPAIR
Advantages of and mechanisms of cross-linking of heat shrinkable polymers for isolation of metals, especially joints and splices from the environment are described. Polymers amenable to heat shrinking provide a convenient, simple, and easy to apply insulation to joints and connections with significant advantages over other insulation methods. Polyethylene cross-linking under heat that causes shrinking is explained along with permeability factors affected by cross-linking. Special coatings for entry zones required for heat shrinkable applications are described. Applications on telephone equipment are described and illustrated, including backup seal for pressurized installations. Diagrams and illustrations and tabulated dielectric factors are included. /Author/
