KEYNOTE ADDRESS: PROCEEDINGS OF THE SPECIAL CONFERENCE ON FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION DATA: THE CHANGING FEDERAL ROLE SINCE DEREGULATION

This Keynote Address discusses why, under deregulation, we need to continue collecting freight transportation data, and why the federal government should be involved in collecting this data. An illustration is given of how the Interstate Commerce Commission, in cooperation with the trucking industry, reduced the roughly 50-page annual reporting requirement for trucking companies to 10 pages by eliminating data that no one was really using and retaining needed data. This address provides an introduction to the conference, directing attention to the critical issue of transportation data needs and resources.
