BEHAVIOR OF CAVITY COLLAPSE AS CAUSE OF CAVITATION DAMAGE OF PROPELLER BLADES
Detailed observations by the use of a high-speed camera were made of the cavities collapsing on marine propeller blades to serve as a basis for a study of the prevention of cavitation erosion. It was found that the sheet cavities on blades separate into two parts, one joining the tip vortex and the other flowing toward and collapsing at the trailing edge. Cavity collapse at the trailing edge can be regarded as a cause of erosion. This is supported by a very clear correlation found between cavity collapse and pressure pulse on an oscillating wing.
