LINKING CAR DESIGN TO CUSTOMER NEEDS. ENGINEERING, MAINTENANCE CAPABILITIES ENHANCE ITEL RAIL'S POSITION IN THE CAR LEASING FIELD.

This article discusses how rail cars may be made more in tune with the customer's needs. Focuses on Itel Rail Corp. and its design engineering team's efforts to work with leasing customers to develop new concepts or modify cars for specific needs. Research and development is another way Itel Rail has differentiated its product from those offered by its competitors. Among projects under way or in field testing are converting boxcars for woodchip service, raising boxcar roofs and increasing capacity for improved high-quality paper loading, testing fiberglass boxcar doors, and continually improving plastic pellet cars with several Itel inventions. Describes Itel's boxcar renovation projects. Specific items under evaluation on boxcars are lighter fiberglass doors which facilitate repairs in the field.
