ADVANCED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

A number of newer traffic control systems have taken advantage of modern electronics technology using distributed system architectures, fiber optic communications, and microprocessor equipment in both the field and central control equipment. Modern traffic control software also reflects significant advances through the use of real-time, closed loop control strategies that automatically respond to changing traffic conditions. The first paper presented in this section describes two systems that use new distributed system architectures and microprocessor technology. The second paper gives details on the application of control system techniques to real-time traffic signal control. A third paper provides a case study of a successful traffic control system implementation in a major U.S. city and describes the potential benefits offered by computer controlled systems. The final paper discusses the application of vision processing for automatic sensing of traffic flows from video monitors.
