THE NEW REGIONAL RAILROADS: MANAGEMENT, PERCEPTIONS, AND APPREHENSIONS
This paper examines the recent trend toward regional railroads. These local railroads have filled a market gap created by the demise of several larger national railroads. The success of these regional lines is attributed to three underlying principles: 1) a focus on service as a main competitive strategy, 2) cultivation of a mutually beneficial relationship with a long-haul carrier, 3) development of sane labor relationships (union or non-union). The article contains profiles of the new regionals, a survey completed by eleven of the new regionals addressing the issues of equipment and track maintenance, long-haul carrier relationships, competition, labor, and future plans.
