COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM OFFERS ACCURATE ROAD DATA

The County Road Information System (CRIS), a database and roadway information system was developed by the County Road Administration Board (CRAB) of the State of Washington for use by all 39 Washington county public works departments. The program's scope ranges from comprehensive inventories, with maintenance and inspection records, to management and planning tools. The system is based on the 'Road Log' and 'Reference Points.' The former defines the road network of counties and 'Reference Points' gives users efficent access to information by describing reference points on roads, rather than making the system accessible by milepost only. CRAB was developed in response to a need created by Washington State's requirement for proritizing road systems in a 6-year program. The details are described of the 'RoadLog.' Other inventories in the program cover structures (bridges, culverts, etc.), traffic (signs, signals, guardrails, etc.), draingage structures, reference points, utilities, and mapping.
