LANDFILL COVERS. AN ENGINEERING PERSPECTIVE

The use of geosynthetics in landfill covers is fueled by several considerations including economic benefits and the satisfaction of regulatory permitting requirements and other factors. Multiple layer composites with soils and geosynthetics constitute a complex soil-geosynthetic interaction problem that cannot be evaluated using limit equilibrium techniques with confidence. The best tool to date, the finite element method, is described. Cover components and cofigurations are described, as well as design regulations. A list of performance standards that must be addressed for an equivalency approval is provided. Technical issues that must addressed are also discussed. Case histories are presented that illustrate problems that have arisen with composite liners. The modified United States Environmental Protection Agency cap configuration, together with a checklist of points to be considered is presented. The checklist notes for the engineer, potential problems that may lead to instability.
