TUNNEL BORING IN THE CITY OF STOCKHOLM. SUMMARY OF PROJECT
TUNNELBORRNING I TAETORT, SALTSJOETUNNELN, STOCKHOLM. SAMMANFATTANDE HUVUDRAPPORT
This report is a summary of the research which was undertaken in connection with the construction of a tunnel using the tunnel boring machine method in hard crystalline rock in the city of Stockholm. The main objective of the research was to compare the tunnel boring machine-technique with conventional drilling and blasting. In the area of engineering geology a study was done to illustrate the rock mass influence during full face boring. A hydrological research study was performed. The smooth rock walls of the tunnel gave an opportunity to observe water percolation in the rock mass. Water leakage was compared with water loss measurements. The tunnel boring machine performance was evaluated. Rock type, tectonics and the amount of fractures present in the rock mass influence the penetration rate. The working condition and the effects on the surface environment are described and evaluated.
