REAR POSITION LIGHTS INADEQUATE

In this article, the light intensity of rear position lights on commercial vehicles in South Africa is discussed. In total, 213 vehicles at weighing stations on level sites in the Transvaal and Natal were examined. The survey highlighted the following general problems: (1) poor electrical connection to position lights; (2) wiring for brake and position lights switched around; (3) incorrect wattage and voltage lamps fitted; (4) different types of rear lights fitted; (5) incorrect scaling; (6) damaged lenses; (7) lights incorrectly fixed; and (8) drivers had a poor knowledge of the lights and lamps. As a result of the survey, 29 lights were evaluated photometrically to determine whether they complied with the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) or European Standards. None of the 29 examined complied with these standards.
