THE ENVIRONMENTAL INTEGRATION PLAN FOR THE FIANO-SAN CESARIO
IL PROGETTO DI SISTEMAZIONE AMBIENTALE ADOTTATO PER LA FIANO-SAN CESARIO
The Fiano-San Cesareo motorway interchange, opened to traffic on 21 July 1988, links the Milan-Rome and Rome-Naples sections of the Autostrade del Sole. At the end of one year of service the interchange had carried 7.5 million vehicles, equivalent to 20000 vehicles per day (including over 5000 heavy vehicles), totalling 4 million hours of travel time and over 15 million litres of fuel consumption. This article describes the environmental integration of the motorway, which included a morphological remodelling, the installation of a drainage and water evacuation system, and the planting of species consistent with the natural vegetation of the area.
