LIGHT MONORAIL SYSTEM SOON FOR ITALY
PRONTO PER L'ITALIA IL METRO LEGGERO MONOROTAIA
Following successful installation in Sydney in the record time of 26 months, the Von Roll Transport System is being assessed for use in the Milan area. The main features of this monorail LRT (light rail transit) system (in service since July 1988 in Sydney) are as follows: capacity, 15000 passengers/hour; minimum frequency 60 seconds; up to 10 cars per train; up to 250 passengers per train; maximum speed 60 km/hour; minimum curve radius 20 m; max gradient with full load 6%; average elevation of guide rail 5.5 m; distance between column centres 25.35 m; unit weight of structure including columns 360 kg/linear metre. Investment costs are low due to the very light prefabricated structure which can be rapidly installed.
