SKID RESISTANCE--AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
This symposium on skid resistance includes three papers: Skid Resistance--An Historical Perspective; Corrective Measures for Slipperness-European View; and A Review of Current Methods and Mechanisms for Producing Skid Resistant Pavements. The first paper notes that the most promising improvements in this field are in the area of improved geometric and surface characteristics on the part of the highway designer, greater attention to tire type and conditions by the tire manufacturer, concern with tire condition by the public, improved handling characteristics and braking by automobile manufactures, and the education of drivers in handling emergency situations. The review of European measures for correction of slipperiness, describes early developments and recent phenomena; routine measurements and administrative requirements/measures are detailed; and the use of artificial aggregates/synthetic materials is reviewed. Other measures to increase skid resistance such as measures to avoid ponding of water, and quick surface drainage which has led to the introduction of new principles in crossfall design, and surface grooving are described. Vehicle design measures are also detailed. The third paper which reviews the general problems associated with slippery pavements, is restricted to the highway with primary emphasis on the frictional properties of the pavement surface, mechanisms of surface renewal and methods of design and construction or reconstruction of pavements for prolonged high skid resistance. Frequent reference is made to the literatire which deals primarily with the field as it applies to operations in the U.S.A.
