EARTH WALLS: MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE

This article describes a variety of earth retaining systems as well as the criteria for the selection of the right one for a particular site. The basic elements of an earth-retaining structure are described. The selection factors are divided into 9 major categories: soil characteristics; ground water; construction considerations; right-of-way; aesthetics; environmental concerns; durability and maintenance; cost; and politics and tradition. Case histories of earth-retaining structures are described, and include the following: H-3 tunnel access roads in Hawaii; Mount McDonald Tunnel ventilation system, Canada; and Canton-Seagirt facility, Baltimore.
