'SPLIT MASTIC'ASPHALT NEXT OVERSEAS IMPORT?

This article predicts the transfer of European asphalt pavement technology to this country in the near future. Particular attention is focused on 'stone mastic' or 'split mastic' asphalt (SMA), a super-high-performance mix design which Swedish and German experience has shown to resist rutting and hold up to heavy truck traffic. In SMA, coarse aggregate particles form a 'stone skeleton' within the mix, with firm contact with each other; these withstand loadings. The voids are filled with a voidless AC mastic, which 'glues' the particles together. The mastic must be stabilized so that it does not drain off the coarse particles during storage, hauling and laying. The main additive used to stabilize the asphalt mastic is cellulose or mineral fiber. Other findings of a 1990 European study tour are briefly listed.
