HST: THREAT OR ALTERNATIVE
In Europe, major air carriers see the coming of high speed trains as a reliever of congestion and a possible feeder. Whatever the views for and against, there is no doubt that rail will become an increasingly important player on the European transportation scene, and, as train speeds increase, could take some of the pressure off the airlines and the aviation infrastructure on routes up to 250 mi. Chronic ATC problems pushed Lufthansa into the rail business with its own airport express train between Frankfurt and Dusseldorf. In France, the Paris-Lyon TGV route has had a big impact on Air Inter's traffic on the route.
