GREAT LAKES CENTER FOR TRUCK TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH

The University Transportation Centers (UTC) Program was established in 1988 by the Department of Transportation to invite universities to conduct multi-modal research and training concerning the transportation of people and goods, and to foster collaboration between those doing research and the user community. The Great Lakes Center for Truck Transportation Research at the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) is the only UTC which concentrates on the commercial highway transportation industry; it is a cooperative program involving six other regional universities. The research programs focus on changes that fall in the categories of demographic trends, changing economy, energy, environment, transportation trends, safety, new technology, highway systems, and international competition. Current projects concentrate on vehicles (principally commercial, but including buses), roads and highways, economic and statistical analyses, and Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems.
