URBAN SAFETY PROJECT. 3: OVERALL EVALUATION OF AREA WIDE SCHEMES
This report deals with the overall evaluation of the Urban Safety Project and indicates the potential applicability of the approach to general accident reduction in urban areas. Previous reports have described the design and implementation of the schemes (Lynam, Mackie and Davies, 1988) and given interim results (Mackie, Ward and Walker, 1988 a, b, c). More detailed results are available in individual reports on the schemes in Reading, Sheffield and Bristol (Ward, Norrie, Sang, Allsop, 1989), in Nelson (Walker, Gardner, McFetridge, 1989) and in Bradford (Walker and McFetridge, 1989). The basic objectives of the project were: to demonstrate that accident reductions could be achieved, the target reduction being 10 to 15 per cent; to develop the principles used and experience gained to provide guidelines for general application. This report assesses the overall accident changes achieved and presents the measured changes in a suitable way to allow broader conclusions and guidelines to be drawn.
