CRITERIA IN ERGONOMIC STUDIES OF ROAD SAFETY

This project considers, in the light of recent work, methodological problems posed by the definition of safety criteria and their relevance to ergonomic studies. Methods of categorizing accidents are discussed, and, because of the inadequacy of the term "accident", other definitions of safety are suggested which describe the same dysfunctioning of the system. The nature and validity of several broad categories of criteria are discussed (e.g., incidents, near-accidents, infraction of rules, and characteristics of the system). Possible improvements in the study of the nature of accidents and in preventive measures arising from the use of less broad criteria are considered.
