STRUCTURAL DESIGN ANALYSIS OF LARGE SHIPS
In recent years accumulation of new knowledge within subjects related to ship structural design has been extensive. The rapid growth of ship sizes has necessitated the adoption of the fullest possible structural design analysis of each separate ship, with recourse to the most advanced theories relating to static, quasi-static, and dynamic loads, and to the immediate and cumulative response of the structure to such loads over the life of the ship. The paper treats in a broad manner, without touching on the theoretical or experimental evidence, recent extensions of our knowledge regarding sea loads and motions, discussing especially horizontal bending moments, shear forces, and twisting moments. The response analysis of a ship structure by the finite element technique is discussed. It is shown how the structural interaction between a local structure and the rest of the ship can be modeled in order to facilitate a detail analysis with boundary conditions reflecting the rest of the ship with reasonable accuracy. The question of vibration loads as a cause of local structural failures has come into focus in recent years. Localized vibration excitation and prevention is considered in a broad manner.
