NOISE CONTROL FOR PORTABLE AIR COMPRESSORS

The Environmental Protection Agency has recommended regulations that would limit the noise levels of portable air compressors. Before these Federal regulations were proposed, however, several municipalities had issued their own noise control standards for air compressors, the strictest being those of New York City. The main noise producing components of an air compressor are the diesel engine and the cooling fan. Several companies produce devices that act as barriers between the source of noise and the receiver. A noise control system of this type, developed by the Gardner-Denver Co., is described and illustrated. The acoustic and aerodynamic performance results are described, and it is concluded that further study must be conducted to determine whether the stringent noise levels required by New York City are really necessary for everyday operations. The noise reduction models described in this article, however, are readily available at this time and can effectively limit the noise generated by air compressors.
