STATE DOT'S AND THE INTERNATIONAL ROAD FEDERATION
The 3 worldwide international highway organizations of significant importance are noted: The Permanent International Association of Road Congreses (PIARC); the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD); and the International Road Federation (IRF). The objectives and strategies of the IRF are noted, and their international meetings, executive conferences, professional study programs, videotate program, and fellowship program are discussed. The IRF bibliiography of current literature is also noted. The article points out reasons why state Departments of Transportation should be members of IRF. IRF members can make use of the data resources at the IRF Secretariat, or through IRF at various collaborating agencies, to obtain answers on theoretical or practical questions regarding roads. IRF affiliates and contacts can serve individual U.S. states in other areas as well.
