A LOOK AT WHAT SOME STATES ARE DOING. OREGON'S BIKE PROGRAM
Oregon Department of Transportation's lead in the funding and development of bikeways, and the honors earned by the department are noted. It is noted that today, the focus is shifting from physically separating bikes from motor vehicles to the current trend toward roadway bikeways, in which bicyclists and motorists are given mutual responsibility for sharing the road. Shoulder bikeways are common in rural areas, in which 4- to 6-foot paved shoulders integrate cyclists with motorists. In urban areas, a section of the roadway is designated for exclusive bicycle use. Other components of the Bikeway Program include development of bicycle racing rules; proper signing of state bike routes; revision of the bike route map; and promoting bicycle commuting in urban areas to reduce traffic congestion and pollution.
