THE ART OF ROAD BUILDING
This brief article is concerned with road improvement at the Old Green interchange at Newport. The complexity of this project required diversion of traffic on to sections of the new works to allow others to be constructed. The main points discussed are the 100 mm deflection found in each span of a reinforced concrete footbridge, which was investigated by means of a radioactive isotope technique followed by test loading. Reference is made to the advantages that the work will bring and to the need for bored piles for some of the structures whereas others were founded directly on solid rock. Eight bridges, five subways and twenty-one walls were involved. The remainder of the article is concerned with the variety of finishes that were applied to the concrete surfaces, which included a finish similar to welsh slate and a mural relief cast on a curved wall. The concrete used was mixed to structural quality and the moulded patterns formed using polystyrene, and polyurethane linings. /TRRL/
