A45 NEWMARKET BYPASS: PRE-WAR PLANNING PAYS DIVIDENDS

This article gives an account of the planning and construction of the Newmarket Bypass, which is estimated to be completed in summer 1975. Attention is drawn to the advance planning which has kept public dissent to a minimum and to the present traffic congestion in Newmarket. A brief account of the more important features of the contract is given, it involves 24 km of road and 28 structures, details of which are summarized in a diagram. Reference is made to the use of noise barriers, crash barriers and lighting at sites where they are necessary. Information is given on the drainage system used and the chalk sub-grade which, in contrast with the nearby Bury bypass, has not presented problems through downgrading. After brief reference to the structures, all of which were of concrete except for the steel waterhall bridge and one of which was specially designed for use by racehorses: The author briefly describes the carriageway materials and their sources. Details are then given of the earthmoving involved and of the equipment used for this purpose, and of the problems caused by railways splitting the contract into 4 major sections. The article concludes with a summary of progress made at the time of writing (February 1975). /TRRL/
