A ROAD EMBANKMENT ON SOFT GROUND

UN RILEVATO STRADALE SU TERRENI CEDEVOLI

A section of the road to oristano, leading off the Cagliari-Sessari Motorway, required an embankment to be constructed on soft ground. Pre-construction field and laboratory tests included undisturbed sampling at various depths, followed by penetrometer and trixial compression tests. The results of these tests led to the construction of an embankment 3.5m high flanked by adequate berms with underlying drainage layers. The soil-mechanics tests and results are fully described, and the design of the embankment is illustrated. /TRRL/
