TRANSPORTATION OF THE ELDERLY AND HANDICAPPED
At the last UITP Congress in Budapest Professor Gunter Girnau of the VOV describes efforts in the Federal Republic of Germany to facilitate access to vehicles for passengers in general and the disabled in particular. The first part of an updated transcription comprises an introduction, the key findings of a UITP survey concerning access to public transport for the disabled, and general orientations of propublic transport measures for elderly and disabled persons in West Germany. These measures are analyzed in more detail in the second part. The special conditions needed to use each mode of public transport are described, including metro and regional express networks, light rail, traditional tramways and buses.
