CITIES AND AUTOMOBILE DEPENDENCE: AN INTERNATIONAL SOURCEBOOK

The book provides data on a uniform, standardized basis for major cities of the world, bringing together transport patterns and land use to provide insight into the question of automobile dependency. The basic contention of the book is the need to reassert the importance of those who plan transport infrastructure and land use in cities as a way of addressing the central question of how to make a city less dependent on the automobile. The methodology used is examined to ensure data were defined properly and are comparable on an international basis. Main findings are presented, as are other factors affecting gasoline and car use patterns. Finally, analysis is provided for a series of major policy areas for reducing automobile dependence which appear to develop from the data obtained.
