IN-SITU SHEAR TEST FOR ROCK FILLS
The discussers make comments based on experience gained through the testing of large-size particles in different size samples. The method of applying horizontal load on the sample taking reaction from the side of the trench is expensive and difficult. However, if the 2 are carried out simultaneously and the horizontal load on one is applied by taking reaction from the other, the setup becomes much simpler and convenient. The discussers comment on the authors' use of unconfined compression tests to arrive at certain conclusions. It is considered that the maximum normal pressure (3.08 kg/sq cm) used to carry out tests with a 125.6-m high dam are small. As the study was aimed at providing a record of shear strength of compacted material placed at different parts of the embankment to have a realistic assessment of shear strength, the normal pressure on the sample should have been close to the anticipated normal pressure at the foundation level. Comment is also made in the reported trend of increase of shear strength due to presence of 19-mm particles. It is noted that in many cases, the angle of internal friction increases as the particle size decreases.
