IN-VEHICLE MOTORIST INFORMATION AND NAVIGATION SYSTEM DEMONSTRATION (PATHFINDER). REPORT TO THE LEGISLATURE
This report, prepared in response to Chapter 1427, California Statutes of 1988 (Assembly Bill 1239 - Moore), summarizes the progress of the in-vehicle motorist information and navigation system demonstration known as Pathfinder. Pathfinder is a joint cooperative venture of private industry (General Motors and ETAK Inc.), the Federal Highway Administration, and the California Department of Transportation. The project is based on a cooperative sharing of real-time traffic information between a central traffic control center and specially equipped vehicles via a two-way communications link. The project will be conducted in Los Angeles along the Santa Monica freeway and the five adjacent parallel city streets and is actively supported by the City and County of Los Angeles. The Pathfinder system is an assembly of new technologies in display and information processing and employs new communication devices for transmitting traffic data and motorist information. The system design is complete and is undergoing pilot testing. The year-long field experiment will start in July 1990.
