ASPHALT PAVEMENT THICKNESS DESIGN

This publication presents a method for the thickness design of asphalt pavements for highways and streets. It contains design information for a range of traffic conditions for urban streets and rural highways, for different subgrade conditions and for pavements constructed of asphalt concrete, with emulsified asphalt mixtures, and with untreated aggregate base and subbase materials. The procedures represent a simplification and abbreviation of the basic manual, Thickness Design--Asphalt Pavements for Highways and Streets (MS-1), Ninth Edition, 1981, The Asphalt Institute. The manual should be consulted for a complete understanding of the procedure, and should also be used if (1) subgrade test data and detailed traffic data are available; if (2) the subgrade and traffic classifications used do not describe the actual situation with sufficient accuracy, and (3) to design the second stage of a planned stage-construction project.
