SOUTH EAST ASIAN TRANSPORT. ISSUES IN DEVELOPMENT

In this volume, the authors examine the role of transport in the development of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries. A developmental approach has been adopted in order to trace the evolution of the transport system within the broad economic and social framework of the region. Analyses of the comparative performance of the various ASEAN national systems are undertaken and these highlight the essential differences between them. The transport policies of governments are examined and evaluated in terms of their success or failure in contributing towards overall national development. Specific attention is given to investment in and aid for the transport sector, national transport planning, road and rail issues and development, shipping and ports, air transport growth, and urban problems. Appendices provide the following statistics for Indonesia, Malaysia, the Phillipines and Thailand: a) road transport details (total road length, length of paved road, road density, maintenance and construction expenditures, vehicle ownership (motor cycle, passenger car and lorry); b) rail transport (route length, freight and passenger statistics); c) merchant fleets. Details of shipping are also provided for Brunei; and d) air transport.
