SURFACE WEAR OF PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENTS
The responses are tabulated and discussed of a questionnaire survey of 46 agencies. Specific information was received on 69 pavements most of which were in the Interstate Highway System (50) and ranged in age from 6 months to 26 years with an average of 7 years. In general, adequate skid values were reported for most of the pavements. The average present value was about SN40=41. The highest losses in skid resistance occurred with limestone coarse aggregates. Research has shown the Average Texture Depth (ATD) to be an important parameter for skid resistance, and agencies should inventory pavements in terms of ATD along with skid values. The highest loss in ATD was 51 percent in 2 years on a pavement with a transverse broom texture constructed on glacial aggregates; the pavement was exposed to high studded tire traffic. Six of the continuously reinforced pavements were constructed on untreated bases. Thirteen pavements were constructed with cement contents greater than 6 sacks/cubic yard of concrete. Half of (34) of the pavements were constructed using slip form methods.
