ACCEPTABILITY OF WELD DEFECTS
This paper reviews existing standards for the acceptance or rejection of weld defects in shipbuilding which are arbitrary and not based on fitness for purpose, and discusses the case for changing them to more rationally based standards. The functions of non-destructive testing for quality control and fitness for purpose are discussed and the paper then describes the background to current B.S.I. proposals for the engineering critcal assessment of weld defects. Finally, the paper makes a number of recommendations on the way in which non-destructive testing might be used in shipbuilding for both quality control and engineering critical assessment. These recommendations are based on a ship's structure into a number of areas, each of which requires a different approach to weld quality.
